Lathe this originates from had a swing of 8-3/8" Height from bottom land of cross sġ0" ATLAS LATHE CROSS SLIDE SCREW COMPLETE WITH BALL CRANK HANDLE. While that sounds like fun, to some of us) I already have a backlog of projects. What it really could use is a complete disassembly, clean, check, adjust and reassemble. This becomes one more thing I need not concern myself with. I was eyeballing this as potential drill/mill vice but have since acquired an actual one. Gibbs were slacked to work it loose and for cleaning, it will also ship that way. Compound rotation is smooth and locks well. When assembled it's smooth, steady and feels like it wants to go back to work. But it's obviously from the collar needing better adjustment/ shim rather than thread wear.

I wasn't detecting any appreciable backlash in the compound. Tool rest has some tapped holes from adaptation and compound slide shows a lesser gouge from previous work. There are some dings around the bottom of the cross side, I suspect from having been loaded in a bucket with similar items as they look more recent, they will clean up too. I see evidence of the cross slide base having been hammered on the front end! can't fix stupid. Please study the photo's closely, as I've tried to catch a view of everything described. Overall in pretty fair shape for it's age. Wire brush in wd-40, blow out, wipe down etcetera, till I could see better what was there. I disassembled the slide and rest to the extent seen in the photo's. Have since sold the rest and now changed my mind on keeping this one. Said pieces were neglected and rusting when I got them. Ames#3 precision bench top lathe, in production in the 1920's- 50's. more to me, I have since identified as belonging to a B. What was at first"random mystery pieces". In need of help, last Summer and it came with a collection of other stuff. Therefore this is being sold as is with no warranty or return accepted. As with all my listings this auction starts at $1 so it is a true auction. If you have any questions at all please email prior to bidding so we can get all the details worked out ahead of time. This label is not included with this listing because it is permanently attached to the gear box that is listed in another auction. I have included a close up photo of the original label on the lathe this part came from so the model info can be seen. I believe this lathe was made around 1975. This listing is for the cross slide lead screw with nut and hand crank used to move the tool across the lathe. If you're looking for Sheldon parts be sure to check my other listing. more been gathering dust so I thought perhaps someone could put them to good use. During that process I removed all the gear drive parts. They crossĪ few years back I build a CNC controller for my Sheldon 10" lathe. The screws are made to fit the 9" model A,B or C, the Model 10k and will actually work on the compound& clapper on the South Bend 7" Shaper. This size was fairly universal after about 1939 but please check the thread size on your lathe prior to ordering. We know this because we have been looking for some time) Luckily we have located a limited supply of these new"old stock" fasteners and are making them available to Southbend Lathe owners. South Bend Lathe used an unusual size screw for this application(12-28 thread x 3/4" long with a slotted head and a flat point) so these are virtually impossible to find anywhere now days. A set of 10 will allow you to replace all of the fasteners and have one spare left over to keep in the drawer for future use. These screws are typcially damaged or broken over time as they were usually made of unhardened plain steel and the slotted head is easily broken if it is overtightened. The cross slide uses 5 adjustment screws and the compound uses 4 screws to control the linear motion of those coponents and it keeps the action nice an snug so that that there is no vibration or play in the feeds during turning. We now offer a complete set of 10 replacement fasteners for your convenience. If the old slotted gib adjustment screws on your South Bend Lathe look like the bunged-up or broken screw in the photo above you are in luck.
